well read: For Whom the Bell Tolls
Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls is one of my favourite books (I pretty much like anything to do with the Spanish Civil War). The novel, which was first published in 1940, gives a real insight into the horrors of the war and the dedication of the Republicans to their cause. I loved the strength of the main Spanish characters, some of which were based on people Hemingway had met as a journalist reporting on the war. New and used copies of the book can be ordered on-line via Abebooks |

Dog Day Afternoon
If you've not seen this 1975 film directed by Sidney Lumet, and based on a true story about a botched bank robbery attempt, it's definitely worth seeking out. Al Pacino stars but it's John Cazale's performance as the confused and slightly dim-witted Sal that I liked the best

Labour and Wait is one of my favourite London shops. The thoughtfully curated selection of well made, functional and everyday objects make it a really interesting place to visit. If you're in the Shoreditch area it's definitely worth stopping by the recently relocated shop on Redchurch Street for traditional kitchen essentials, linen towels, Welsh blankets and other household goods |
