well read: Travels with a Donkey

This short novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1879 has influenced a number of other great travel books, including Steinbeck's Travels with Charley (which I posted previously here). Stevenson's characterful donkey Modestine keeps him company on his 12 day journey around the beautiful Cevennes region of France, and the route he took is now nationally recognised and is a preserved ramblers trail. New or used copies of the book are available to order online via Abebooks
