well read: A Kestrel for a Knave

You may not have read this 1968 book from Barry Hines, but like me you probably saw Ken Loach's film 'Kes' years ago. The thing I remember most about the film was the bad language - I felt like I was watching something my parents would have disapproved of, which of course made it ten times better. I recently got around to reading the book, which I really enjoyed - the portrayal of Billy's loneliness and the neglect that he suffers is particularly moving. It's a quick read and you can see why it made such a great film. Click here to order via Abebooks
