Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls is one of my favourite books (I pretty much like anything to do with the Spanish Civil War). The novel, which was first published in 1940, gives a real insight into the horrors of the war and the dedication of the Republicans to their cause. I loved the strength of the main Spanish characters, some of which were based on people Hemingway had met as a journalist reporting on the war.
