Verner Panton's 1960 'total environment' experiment at The Astoria Hotel, Trondheim, Norway. Communal spaces for the building, such as the entry area, a day restaurant with wintergarten and an evening restaurant with dance floor, were designed by Panton. Walls, floors and ceilings were covered in Panton's Optical Art-inspired patterns in variations of the same colour. The quality and cut, as well as the ethical credentials, of US label Apolis appear to be spot on but for whatever reason the brand don't seem to have been picked up by too many retailers in Europe. This versatile chore jacket, handcrafted in California from indigo dyed Italian wool with buffalo horn buttons, looks like it could be a great Autumn essential and for me is the pick of their current collection

well made: Donna Wilson rugs

I'd been considering investing in a large rug for sometime and although I eventually chose an old and fairly well worn flat weave kilim I was really impressed by some of the designs as well as the overall quality of Donna Wilson's Sundara Rug collection. The rugs are all hand-made and woven in India using time honoured production techniques. In addition to the hand loomed Fairisle design (shown above) there is also a kilim and three other hand tufted rugs. Available through SCP

Highly regarded American modernist designer Paul McCobb is practically a household name across the pond but he is little known elsewhere and his work is rarely found outside the US. His Planner Group range of furniture from the 1950's is possibly the most sought after of his designs and I've been lucky enough to recently pick up a few pieces for the shop. Other notable items due to be added to the site shortly include two Poul Jensen Z Chairs, a Hans Olsen extending 'Roundette' table and chair set, and a special Arne Vodder rocking chair which the guys at Albam have had reupholstered with one of their fabrics. interlude: ode to Salford

Although often associated with Ireland and in particular Dublin, 'Dirty Old Town' was actually composed by Salford born Ewan MacColl and first used in his 1949 documentary play on northern industrial England, 'Landscape with Chimneys'. Over the years the song has been covered by a whole raft of musicians but for me this version recorded by Townes Van Zandt in 1996 is the best I've heard
